AANAPISI Resources

aanapisi-program-highline-college-23Advising

To enhance success for AA&PI communities, intensive advising will be available and geared specifically towards AAPI students. This is important because research shows us that many AA&PI students tend to seek advice from peers rather than professional advisers. Because many AA&PI students find professional advising to be ineffective and without personalization, the AANAPISI grant will allow Highline to create culturally relevant, individualized advising. This type of engaging, pointed, and validating advising will allow for greater AA&PI student success.

Learning Communities

Learning communities teach students inner and outer skills for college and life success through a College Success course. AA&PI students enrolled in linked courses, in which faculty coordinate syllabi and assignments, will be matched with other AA&PI students with similar backgrounds in educational environments. Connected course sequences and peer accountability will help increase the likelihood of student success by encouraging engagement, learning, and satisfaction.

Tutoring

Learning communities will be coordinated with existing tutoring services, as well as new tutoring support, which will ensure students receive the support they need in all courses. A support network made up of AANAPISI staff, faculty, and Tutoring Center staff will work together to identify and assist students identified as “at-risk” to provide a specialized tutoring program.

Co-Curricular Activities

Students will have new opportunities to engage in community-based leadership activities, leadership development, educationally and enriching experiences outside the classroom. Activities will be connected to curriculum, students’ interests, and educational goals. Co-curricular activities will be tied into outreach activities and academic programming to help students build a sense of community and civic engagement.

Student Ambassadors – HAPISAs

HAPISAs – Highline Asian American & Pacific Islander Student Ambassadors – are hardworking AA&PI students that are dedicated to welcoming and supporting our program participants.
